An area of physiotherapy that is constantly on the rise is treating a patient with back pain. But why is back pain on the rise and how can physiotherapy help? Read on to find out more…

Strain on the back and general back pain does not always link back to sports and may not always be the result of hard physical labour. With a rising number of individuals taking jobs in sedentary roles using computers, a majority of problems can be caused due to sitting in the same position for a long period of time, as well as a contributing factor of adopting a poor posture whilst sitting.

The symptoms that can occur can range from shoulder and neck pain, to lower back pain and even referred symptoms such as sciatica and thoracic outlet syndrome.

A poor postural position can place extra strain on the ligaments, muscles, tendons and soft tissues that support the spine, and can quickly develop into a chronic problem if it isn’t addressed and treated in a timely manner.

Of course, back is not limited to those who only have a sedentary job. Those that lift heavy weights, have a job involving manual handling, take part in an unpractised activity, or overload the muscles on a regular basis in any way can also be at risk of damaging structures in the back.

Achieve Physiotherapy has a back pain programme that can be adapted to treat all natures of back injuries, whether they stem from working, playing sports, from an accidental fall or from a motor vehicle accident.
